German, Austrian, Swiss, and South Tyrolean food? It’s all here at the Jägerhof Restaurant. Christopher and Kassandra, the owners, reopened the restaurant in 2014.

This unique slice of Alpine Europe in North Van is truly one-of-a-kind. Inside, they stayed true to the original decor of a traditional Alpine chalet, complete with wooden beams and rustic furniture.

We ordered the platter so we could try a bit of everything on the menu, ranging from the charcuterie plates to the artisan sausages, schnitzels, and most of the regional specialties.

Now, we’re not sure what they’re doing in that kitchen, but everything was just, right off the bat, delicious. What stood out the most to us was the sauerkraut, which was the best we’ve ever had.

But we recommend you go for the platter, just like we did. It would give you the opportunity to get a taste of everything, and the portions are generous, so don’t attempt it if you’re not hungry.

It’s also a good idea to pair your meals with one of their beer selections, as they offer a pretty impressive choice from Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, BC, and Bavaria.

There’s also live music with a melodious piano, which really sets the tone for us while dining here. However, fair warning, the restaurant gets a bit busy, so we highly recommend you make a reservation.

Pros

  • Wide variety of European cuisine
  • Great beer selection of various European countries

Cons

  • Limited seating capacity

Customer Reviews

Overwhelmingly good food

“I could cry over how good the food was. Everything we ordered was amazing. Sauerkraut they serve is the best I’ve EVER had as well…”

Incredibly friendly staff

“Amazing. I think one of the best parts of this place beside the food is the incredibly friendly and welcoming atmosphere that starts with Christophe…”

Opened in 2020, Chop and Chew is a pretty laid back joint. There’s sports playing on wall-mounted TVs, LED lights that line the bar area, copper piping underneath the countertop, and just enough seating for a cozy atmosphere.

So the restaurant’s philosophy is to use locally sourced ingredients in all of their dishes. It’s quite distinct to us that, behind their food, is the combined taste of an authentic sausage, both meat and vegan, with modern flavors.

So of course we just had to order in a bunch of sausage platters, starting with the mac and cheese sausage, and it was phenomenal. Mac and cheese was creamy, and the sausage tasted perfectly seasoned.

Chop and Chew's Homepage

We liked that they also have vegan and gluten-free sausages for those with dietary restrictions. Aside from that, do yourself a favor and order their mushroom wings as your appetizer.

The wings were tender and juicy, topped with a delicious marinara sauce. But of course we also had to order poutine, and let us tell you, their homemade bone broth gravy was nothing short of spectacular.

The restaurant’s indoor seating is a bit limited though, but we appreciate that there’s more seats outside. They also have trivia nights on Wednesdays so make sure not to miss that!

Pros

  • Food made entirely of local ingredients
  • Handful of meat and vegan options

Cons

  • Limited indoor seating

Customer Reviews

“If you’re looking for a great local spot with amazing food, look no further!  I was visiting from the states and wanted a great dish of poutine for my last night there…”

Orto’s is quite a spot to dine for nature lovers, featuring a garden patio with lush plants like grapevines, quince trees, herbs, and tomatoes. It’s grown so nice that it creates a nice separation between diners.

We’ve had a nice lunch here, where we gobbled up various dishes such as salad, omelets, and pasta. Orto’s is fairly known for their artisan pastas, so we made sure to order one of each.

We have to say that the pasta came out very fresh and flavorful, with the perfect al dente texture. We later found out that they’re handmade fresh daily, so that explains the great taste and texture.

Orto's Homepage

Out of the nine pastas they serve, our top pick has got to be the squid ink spaghetti with scallops, prawns, garlic, and white wine. It had lovely tomatoey flavors and the right amount of garlic and seafood.

We then had tiramisu and lemon tart for dessert, and we ended our meal with a lovely conversation while surrounded by a breathtaking garden where aspects of our dishes were pulled from.

Here at Orto’s, they’ll almost always recommend you a seat in the garden area, but there are also plenty inside if that’s what you prefer.

Oh, and don’t forget to take home some fresh pasta as soon as it’s available for purchase at the restaurant.

Pros

  • Artisan pastas
  • Gorgeous garden patio area

Cons

  • Frequently booked

West Coast cuisine in a warehouse-style building is pretty much what you get at this long-standing restaurant in North Van. The Gull Bar and Kitchen is a classic pub where you can enjoy a cold pint of beer with delicious food.

The place is tidy, with a nod to the nautical theme of the nearby shipyard district. They have a focus on local craft beers, BC wines, and locally sourced ingredients. If you enjoy a casual meal with a cold glass of beer, you’ll definitely like it here.

Here you’ll also find, quite arguably, one of the best burgers in North Van. Served with hand cut fries, with burgers grounded in-house, and topped with a variety of gourmet ingredients.

The Gull Bar and Kitchen's Homepage

The gull-style burger is a must-order. The beef paddy arrives a touch pink, but it’s quite delicious.

The animal burger was also something. It’s the safe choice for first-time diners as it features the classic house-ground beef with lettuce, tomato, American cheese, pickles, and a tangy burger sauce.

Oh, and if you’re considering dessert, we suggest you get the birdie bar. It’s filled with dark chocolate and a hint of toffee, all housed in a peanut butter crust that adds a delightful crunch.

Pros

  • Classic pub ambience
  • Nautical-themed restaurant

Cons

  • Limited dessert selection

Customer Reviews

BLVD Bistro is where quirky decor and delicious food collide. You’re immediately greeted with a cozy and inviting atmosphere that makes it a great spot for dinner dates or gatherings.

We mostly drop by the BLVD Bistro for breakfast, and we’d like to commend the consistency of their food. We always make sure to get the benedicts, which are served with bread pudding.

Our favorite, the BLVD blackstone benedict, is, in our opinion, a must-order. It’s quite a unique dish, topped with a sweet and sour tomato chutney that perfectly complements the rich and creamy hollandaise sauce.

But if you’d like something a bit heavier, look over the BLVD classics. They’ve got a little something for everyone on this menu, from breakfast sandwiches to fully-packed breakfast bowls.

For vegans out there, the BLVD Bistro’s ‘Beautiful Buddhist’ bowl is quite popular so you may want to check that out. It’s absolutely delicious and flavorful.

Oh, and another thing. If you like spicy food, make sure to try their hot sauce; it’s the bomb. Too bad they don’t sell these because we would’ve taken home a bunch.

Pros

  • Wide selection of benedict dishes
  • Vegan options available

Cons

  • Long wait during peak hours

Kitchen Craft Eatery is where you can score good coffee and taste comfort foods like sandwiches, baked goods, salad bowls, and a whole bunch more breakfast classics.

So here’s the deal with this restaurant: Aside from the delicious food, the outdoor patio is just another level. We almost always try to score a seat out here while we bite into a delicious chicken sandwich.

Speaking of which, you should definitely get this one with their seasoned fries and sausage rolls. This sandwich features a brined and seasoned chicken breast sandwiched between brioche buns.

The avocado toast and turkey sandwiches are also solid choices, as they’re both scrumptious and packed with flavor.

You can also bring your furry friend here at Kitchen Craft Eatery, and the staff is very accommodating towards them, bringing a water bowl and some treats to keep them happy.

Here’s a tip. If you have time, drop by here at the end of the day as they give out leftover pastries as a free dessert!

Pros

  • Pet-friendly restaurant
  • Wide selection of sandwiches

Cons

  • Does not offer delivery

Hachi Hana is a low-key sushi place along Lonsdale Avenue. Here you’ll chow down on fresh fish, tasty sushi, deliciously fried takoyaki and chicken, and a whole bunch of Japanese staples.

Now, you’ll notice right away that a lot of people here do takeout, as there aren’t a lot of tables inside. So we recommend you come as early as 11 a.m. (30 minutes or an hour before opening, depending on the day).

And yes, you guessed it, they don’t really accept reservations. But what we liked here is that you can order your food ahead, which pretty much serves as an assurance that you’ll get a table.

Hachi Hana's Homepage

If you’re dropping by, we recommend the ‘Lonsdale Dinner Boat Special’. It’s good for three people, and we think it’s a great deal for the assorted sashimi and nigiri sushi.

The vibe of the place is certainly intimate, with an apparent Japanese influence in the decor and ambiance. You can see the chefs cooking the food right in front of you at the open kitchen counter, which we loved to watch while waiting for our food.

It’s also commendable that the servers here frequently refill your tea if you want to, which sooner or later you’ll appreciate as the tea will help you make room for more sushi in your system.

Pros

  • Great selection of sushi
  • Intimate restaurant vibe

Cons

  • Limited indoor seating

An Italian restaurant along 2nd Street, Farina a Legna, is the go-to spot for wood-oven pizzas. Let us start by saying that everything on here is meant for sharing, as the portions are really generous.

Farina a Legna has a nice selection of antipasti, pasta, and pizza, and they showcase seasonal ingredients from local farmers and specialty items from Italy.

To give an accurate review of the food, we ordered different flavors of pizza and pasta, and while everything tasted divine, we were particularly fond of the classic Margherita pizza with roasted garlic as an add on.

It had a great, chewy crust that allowed us to taste the toppings bit by bit, and we enjoyed it with their house red wine.

But if wine is not your preference, they also have some pretty tasty in-house cocktails that are made fresh daily, so we suggest you order right away as they run out fast.

Service wise, the staff was attentive, despite the fact that it was a busy Friday evening. Just make sure to get a reservation ahead of time, as they only accept a limited number of customers.

And we almost forgot! The tiramisu! You have got to order the tiramisu for dessert. It was absolutely divine, with layers of mascarpone, lady finger cookies, and a hint of espresso. It was the perfect ending to our meal.

Pros

  • Generous food portions
  • Freshly-made cocktails daily

Cons

  • Limited reservations only

This vegetarian cafe has a gorgeous interior layout, with plants filling up the well-lit space of the dining area. The Workshop Vegetarian Café is an easygoing spot for yummy vegan food and a cup of joe.

The decor here at the Workshop Vegetarian Café is minimalist but stylish. You’ll see quaint wood counters and tables, along with different-colored metal chairs and hanging light bulbs.

We always get the spicy Tan Tan Ramen when we’re here, and it can be served either hot or cold. If you don’t mind a bit of a spicy kick, we highly recommend this dish.

The Workshop Vegetarian Café's Homepage

It’s made with their signature creamy organic butternut squash broth and Rayu chili oil. The soup itself is divine, especially when you press the vegetables into it and let them wilt slightly in the soup.

They also have an incredible variety of ramen and noodle dishes if you’d like to try some of ’em out. Some of their other notable dishes include the smashed avocado toast, teriyaki burger, and Buddha bowl.

They also have a good selection of baked goods for take home products (the cinnamon buns are what we always seem to take home with us).

Pros

  • Wide variety of ramen and noodle dishes
  • Baked goods available for takeout

Cons

  • Relatively pricey

Sadra Restaurant serves Persian cuisine right along Lonsdale Avenue, and it’s famous for its tahdig. If you’re not sure what that is, tahdig is scorched rice that can be paired with a variety of flavorful stews and kebabs.

Get the chicken and beef koobideh to pair with your tahdig. We swear it’s so good, you may just as well order a second plate.

We’re no experts when it comes to Persian food, but we think it’s safe to say that we enjoyed our meal here at Sadra Restaurant. Aside from the tahdig, their lamb shank was also nice, and the portions are great for the price.

You also ought to get the barley and mushroom soup while you’re at it, as it would be such a shame to miss out on its rich and earthy flavors.

Inside, the restaurant has enough space to accommodate large groups, but there’s also patio seating if you prefer dining outside. Although street parking is quite limited, keep that in mind.

We give it a 5-star rating overall. There’s even live music playing on certain nights, adding to the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.

Pros
