What is Wreck Beach known for?
Wreck Beach is an expansive parkland of the University Land Endowments. This beach provides stunning views, sandy shores, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Located on the west end of UBC, it provides locals and tourists with a one-of-a-kind coastal experience, fostering body positivity and acceptance of diverse lifestyles.
Wreck Beach is known as the city’s clothing-optional beach. Back in 1991, the Greater Vancouver Regional District gave it the official nod as a clothing-optional beach, making it the only beach in Canada to snag that distinction.
Is there free parking at Wreck Beach?
Yes, there is free parking at Wreck Beach. You can pull over along Marine Drive north of W 16th Avenue, and you’re good to go. But heads up, it’s a hot spot for parking since much of the UBC campus has paid lots.
So, expect some competition for those spots from students, faculty, and staff. Oh, and watch out for tow-away zones if you’re eyeing limited roadside parking.
Can you swim at Wreck Beach?
Yes, you can swim at Wreck Beach. Swimming is actually a popular activity here at Wreck Beach, and is primarily a spot for brief “dips” to cool off. However, since the water is a little cold, swimming far from shore is not advised.
How to Get to Wreck Beach
By car: From Martha Piper Plaza, head west on University Boulevard. Take a right onto NW Marine Drive. Look for the trail on your left in the open area with outhouses. Follow that trail down the stairs to Wreck Beach.
By public transit: hop on the SB Granville Street and get off at UBC Exchange Bay 11. From that bus stop, Wreck Beach would be an 18-minute walk.
